How life feels Source
Growing up, we take risks by exploring the world. Often, we are with friends building, creating, and discovering. My best friend Ryan and I would build often build forts with spare wood and feel like builders. We wouldn't think of what failure would come if our build did not work. As a child, failure comes naturally. As an adult, failure has to be thought about until it's something we accept as productive. Somewhere in between we lose confidence to fail with our head up. Our minds are restricted by endless bubbling that has a predetermined answer. Often, we are on our own to explore the universe or at the luck of getting a teach who has a subject that gives them wiggle room to create a space for this type of learning.
This is the story of us as individuals who are capable of extraordinary discovers. Yet, we are held down often by the very place that is suppose to enable us. Our freedom to learn has never been better. At our fingertips are endless learning opportunities. My goal is address two fears that are capable of keeping us at inaction. One has been described already and that is the test driven environment that we are brought up in. Few are the classes that reward failure and give it the room to be helpful. We must embark on our own learning adventures to fail there often on our own but hopefully we find friends to go with us.
Our next fear is actually freedom. Lately, I've been reading Seth Godin's book "Your Turn". He talks about how freedom can be a crippling idea to many of us. Not everyone but those taking this course have some sort of access to the internet. We have the ability to comb through resources and learn. It's our choice whether we take advantage of all of the opportunities in front of us. One opportunity I took advantage of is the learning to code on your own. This is only one example, I know not everyone is looking to become a developer. I wanted to provide a couple of examples of these resources. This post's goal is to help you consciously think about what is keeping you at bay from creating. Whether it is the fear of failure or the fear of choice, it is time to acknowledge it so you can grow.

Author's Note:
I drew my inspiration from this one line from Indrajit. In Indrajit, the monkeys are afraid because they saw their heroes get badly wounded by Indrajit. This story is depicts an intense battle with Lakshmana almost dying. Garuda comes to heal the monkeys of the wicked weapon that was used against them.
"But the monkeys were panic-stricken, and if even a straw moved they deemed it to be a rakshasa."
This made me think of fears that are so strong they imprison us. We are in a place of idle though, grow, and creation. The monkeys they were so spooked of the rakshasa that they were incapable of anything else. I wanted us to be aware that school is the end game. Learning doesn't stop there. Also, we shouldn't be afraid of the freedom we have to learn in the internet. We should take advantage of that opportunity. Before, I became aware of the power of self learning (or actually caring enough to learn outside of school.) I glided through school. I want others to find the moment where it clicks and they start creating.
The picture was chosen because it reminds me of how life feels when school is in full swing with organizations having events and work every other day. Life seems to fly by as we try to catch up. This too can be something that slows us down. We have to manage our time correctly because if not we will get swept up by the current and washed ashore.

As an essay, I think this works pretty well. You bring up some really interesting points about the nature of fear and how restrictive it can be, and I definitely agree with your overall message. Your writing is clear and your prose is striking. I can appreciate that you took a more non-standard approach to the assignment and tried to think outside the box, and for that you should be applauded; but I think you moved this out of "story" territory and more into "blogpost" or "essay" territory.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you too. Looking back after writing this I realized this wasn't a story. I've had a crazy week. I scrambled to catch up so I had to move on. Thank you for the kind words.
DeleteI agree with your main idea. Overcoming a fear is like going out of your comfort zone. Frustrations are inevitable, but we learn during these failures. Life is not like a video game, most of the failures can be avoided because we can always adjust our plans.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to read a story beyond the Ramayana. Keep challenging and do not let fear control you!
