(W3) Reading Diary A: Public Domain Ramayana

Sugriva and Vali

This story was emotionally charged. I could feel the deep concerns Tara had for Vali not to fight Sugriva. She urged him not to battle with his brother and forgive him. We could be Vali and be unwilling to give up ground in a situation.  Tara could be a family member or dear friend who knows that we are walking into certain death. Yet, we choose to be prideful and attack.

Vali's Death

I was taken back from this story because Rama murders someone in pretty much cold blood. I need to read some other retellings of this story. It seemed like they only tried the fighting outcome.

Hanuman's Leap

"Then Jambavan addressed Hanuman, and recalled his birth and origin, how the wind-god had begotten him and his mother Anjana had borne him in the mountains, and when he was still a child he had thought the sun to be a fruit growing in the sky, and sprang easily three thousand leagues toward it; howIndra had cast a bolt at him, breaking his jaw; how the wind-god in anger began to destroy the heavens and earth, till Brahma pacified him and granted him the boon that his son should be invulnerable, and Indra gave him the boon of choosing his own death."

This is so awesome. That he reached for something that was unobtainable yet in the process reach great heights. There could be a really important message in reaching for something further than what's within grasp so that you are extended and are challenged. I might write about this in my storytelling or in a blog post in general.

Hanuman in Lanka

  • Ravana's queen
  • exceeding all others in her splendor and loveliness, and
  • Hanuman guessed she must be Sita
Hanuman went to extreme lengths to find Sita. One thing I wonder is how he was able to walk around everywhere undetected.

Sita and Ravana

"but she refused him utterly, and foretold his death at Rama's hands."

Sita is brave in refusing and resisting Ravana. Even in the face of death, she is holding strong to her husband.

Hanuman and Sita

"Hanuman offered to carry her away, but in her modesty she refused to touch the body of any male being save Rama."

This is serious devotion. Even when it is rescuing she won't let another man touch her.

Hanuman Captured

Jambumali
  • the powerful , son of Prahasta
  • he wounded him with a sharp arrow
  • Hanuman hurled a bolt at him and crushed him utterly.
Prince Aksha
  • with concentrated mind, pondered over the true character of Hanuman and with spiritual insight perceived that he was not to be slain by weapons. Therefore he devised a way to bind him, and he loosed a Brahma shaft at him.

Vibhishana

Vibhishana, his younger brother, who censured the monarch for the offence which he had committed against blameless Rama.

Vibhishana was thus banished from the rakshasa kingdom, and he immediately crossed the sea and joined the forces of Rama.

Go Vibhishana, standing up against Ravana. That's must have taken a lot of courage. I want to read more into him!
